Troubleshooting USB Audio Artifacts or Latency![]() ![]()
As with any USB audio interface, there are many potential causes of symptoms like distortion, artifacts (clicks/pops/crackling), and latency. This guide provides some helpful tips to troubleshoot the issue and get you back to dj-ing!
ContentsTroubleshooting USB Audio Symptoms
The best way to troubleshoot any broad symptoms, like audio quality issues, is to first eliminate potential causes. The following approach will help better isolate the trouble: Vcv rack bridge vst download.
USB 3.0 Ports and USB 2.0 Devices
Since it's inception, the USB protocol has gone through three major revisions: USB 1, USB 2.0, and USB 3.0/3.1. The USB 3.0 spec requires that it be fully backwards compatible with USB 2.0 devices. However, not all USB 3.0 ports or the computers they're connected to will achieve this USB 2.0 backwards compatibility properly. Here are some ways to identify and troubleshoot USB 3.0 related issues.
2015 Macbook Pro USB Issues
Of special note, there is an issue with some of the 2015 Apple Macbook Pro model USB ports which may cause specific problems with USB audio devices.
Symptoms will include a sudden extreme latency (1+ seconds) after approximately 5-10 minutes of use, requiring the device to be disconnected, then reconnected to temporarily resolve.
Here are the Model Identifiers for affected Macbook Pro models:
You can find your Model Identifier by going to your Apple menu and select About This Mac > System Report. More information about various Macbook Pro models and revisions can be found here.
With these MacBook Pro models, the Kanex USB to Thunderbolt adapter linked below can be used to connect your USB audio device to a Thunderbolt port and resolve any latency or distortion issues with the USB ports.
Before considering purchasing any adapters for use with one of these affected Macbook Pro Models, be sure to run through the above troubleshooting first.

Last night I did my first gig using my new VCI-300 and Itch, and I had major, major problems with dropouts. On average, I'd say one out of every two or three songs had multiple dropouts. This starting happening very early on in my set, which lasted more than four hours.
It was my first time at this club and the owner was not pleased with the technical problem. At first I thought it might be a problem with the club's sound system, but as the night went on, I realized the issue was on my end. Obviously I was embarrassed and disappointed. I had not noticed any dropouts at all while using the unit at home, though I haven't had it very long. I'm playing at the same club again next Friday and need to have this issue fixed by then. My specs: MacBook Pro OS X 10.6 (I just upgraded to 10.6.1 today, post-gig) 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM 200 GB internal hard drive with 20 GB free Itch 1.1 I'm looking at the suggestions posted above for PC users, and I'm wondering if these (and maybe others) apply for Mac users. - Bluetooth was on 'discoverable' but I never use Bluetooth. - Wireless networking was on, but I was not connected to one or using one. - Screen saver and sleep mode should (at least theoretically) be irrelevant because I never left the computer for more than three minutes at a time (though let me know if I should switch these off anyway). No other software was running. I had done a restart of my machine right before my set. The VCI-300 was powered by the MacBook Pro and connected to the left USB port on the Mac. The Mac was running off battery power for the first 20 minutes of the set, the for the rest of the night (when most of the dropouts happened) the AC charger was plugged in. I wasn't doing anything complicated with the software or hardware at all. Not adjusting pitch or tempo whatsoever. Literally just cueing and playing rock songs. I don't know anything about USB drivers other than what I just found in a quick Google search. Is this something I need? What other things can I do or change? Please help. Thanks.
